Shorehaven and Journey21 mark a partnership journey
Zackary Snyder and James Tiffany learned a lot about seniors, and themselves, in this semester’s Journey21 Learning Academy assignment at Shorehaven.
Their job coach Kenny Rabbitt said the experience most likely changed their lives.
“Working here has been really meaningful work,” said Rabbitt. “The interns have learned the value of serving an older population.”
The students executed a variety of tasks, helping in resident households and engaging directly with residents. “They look forward to seeing me,” said Snyder. “They laugh and smile when they see us. We always want to hear their joke of the day.”
Tasks have included reassembling tables, sweeping and mopping floors, running dishwashers, wiping down counter tops and folding napkins to put away. The young men have challenged residents in Connect Four, checkers and other games, completed jig jaw puzzles and spurred conversations.
“But most of all,” said Rabbitt, “The men have learned empathy and understanding, and worked on skills including eye contact and clear communication…They’ve learned how to be positive, patient and how to address older people with respect.”
Both the interns “worked hard on problem solving, making friendships, and how to effectively listen,” said Rabbitt. “I just really liked to make the residents smile,” said Snyder. “I always looked forward to coming here.” “We learned something different each time we came,” said Tiffany. “I think we made a difference.”
Aside from helping with resident happy hour, painting pumpkins, assembling crafts and escorting to activities, Rabbitt said there was “automatic acceptance” between the parties. “It was a pleasant surprise in first coming to Shorehaven, how easily the dialogue came, and how a mutual sense of humor was just naturally shared.”
The 12-week Journey21 course involves the local business community, creating beneficial opportunities for both students and businesses involved. Journey21 strives to provide safe, supportive and enriching living and learning options for adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities in Waukesha County and surrounding areas.
Shorehaven is home to 380 seniors in all levels of care, and employs more than 370 staff on the shores of Lac La Belle. Its mission is to “Provide homes and resources for seniors in a manner which reflects Christ’s love.”
