Life unfolds at all ages, young and old, and can be thrilling and fun. We believe that seniors should be able to age with dignity – fully aware of the opportunities of interacting in their local community. That’s why we at Shorehaven have acquired our first bicycle rickshaw – called a trishaw – through Cycling Without Age, a program that originated in Denmark nearly a decade ago that pairs volunteer cyclists with seniors.

trishaw trail rideShorehaven staff note, “Our goal is to allow our residents to reconnect with their community, enjoy the stimulation of nature and give them the hope of being able to participate in an activity that once was deemed impossible.”

A volunteer cycling driver – called a pilot – can use an electric motor assist to power the trike from behind. We’re blessed to currently have more than a dozen volunteer trishaw pilots on board – volunteers who can not only get a healthy dose of exercise but can build a bridge between our campus and community.

The purchase of the trishaw, made possible by an anonymous donor, reinforces our goal of providing recreational programs that are innovative, beneficial and therapeutic for seniors. It’s a prime platform to remind seniors of their youth and connect generations through storytelling and sharing experiences right here in our community.

We invite you to share in the fun as you see the trishaw touring about town. Wave to the passengers and pilot, and experience the thrill our residents will feel as they relive the joy and nostalgia of riding a bike again.

Want to serve as a volunteer pilot? Call us and we’ll set you up for training and orientation. It will prove to be an invaluable adventure.
