“We’re all working in the residents’ home and Kyle realizes that,” Shorehaven staff Terri Derge noted. “This young man is eager to learn, an awesome team member and very conscientious. He’s blossomed from the first day he came into our household.”

Journey21 intern Kyle Corcoran is on a 12-week adventure, developing job skills, engaging with residents and taking guidance from staff. “He’s developing his communication skills, social and work aspects,” said Journey21 Life Academy instructor Ryan Dodge. “Shorehaven has proven to be a good fit for him. We’ve seen so much growth in him.”

Corcoran takes his work seriously. And he expects a lot of himself when he enters the LaBelle household. “I’ve learned I can do different things in a more efficient way. I clean, fold napkins, and put things away. I’m learning a discipline and I’m more intentional in what I do.”

His experience with Shorehaven has been gratifying. He’s reached out to staff and residents, reached a comfort level with speaking with new acquaintances, and always hastily returns to the assignment rendered that day. “I care for and about people. I’ve done that my whole life. I want to give others the best chance at succeeding.”

Derge said she upholds Corcoran and his impact on LaBelle household.  “Kyle takes into consideration all the residents. He’s gained confidence here, and the residents see that in him. We believe in him, and know he’s going to do well out there.”

The Journey21 Life Academy internship engages the local business community, creating meaningful opportunities for both students and participating businesses. Journey21 stives to provide safe, supportive and enriching living and learning options for adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities in Waukesha County and surrounding areas. Shorehaven is home to 380 seniors in all levels of care and employs more than 400 staff on the shores of Lac La Belle. Its mission is to “Provide homes and resources for seniors in a manner which reflects Christ’s love.”
